New Peppermint Angel Video

The continually elusive Peppermint Angelfish (Paracentropyge boylei) has gotten a recent YouTube cameo, compliments of 44AZR. The tank has gotten a re-scape or is entirely new, but the shrimp and notched dorsal (albeit healing) suggest this is still the specimen belonging to Mr. Uragami.

Update: This little gem is being held at Japanese LFS Marin Technique while a new tank is worked on.

Mr. Uragami’s fish is the only publicly known specimen in captivity. Read into that as much or little as you’d like.

SplashSea Films the Rare Centropyge resplendens

Japanese marine specialty store SplashSea, has recently uploaded this brief clip showing off the incredibly rare Resplendent Angelfish (Centropyge resplendens).

Centropyge resplendens is so rarely seen due to its limited range. Endemic to Ascension Island in the middle of the Atlantic, the collection of this species is a logistical and legal nightmare. Every so often a few will illegally find their way into the markets–and being on the IUCN red list (least concern, due to limited range) this is not a another bruise that the hobby needs. That said, it is important to note that the Resplendent Angel was captive bred by Frank Baensch (RCT) and some legal specimens are out there.

I won’t delve into the legality of this particular specimen, but the google translation of the video’s description is worth a laugh:

Last Day of the Glassbox on Film

The glassbox, my personal aquarium prior to tear down.

Just before tearing down my 90g rimless aquarium, or what I refer to as my glassbox, I sought the help of some friends to take make a brief video. A few corals and one piece of live rock were sold before filming, but overall this is how it looked over the past 3-6 months.

I’ve caught flack in the past for not sharing that many updates of the tank. Truthfully, it was because there was always something I wanted to try first. As much as this tank was a display tank, it was also a test tank. Every marketed amino acid, biopellet, and off the shelf organic carbon product I can think of got experimented with. So did an alarming number of skimmers, reactors, and lights; few of which ever made it on the pages of GBD.

Looking back at the video now, I am pleased. I hope it gave aquarists some ideas on presenting an aquarium and I am delighted at the recent increase in “Butterfly in a reef tank” discussions that have been taking place. As for my favorite Butterflies, I have donated them all to good homes. The C. declivis lives in a large new home in Atlanta. The Banks got an upgrade in Chicago. The Hybrid and Marcellae were donated to the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, CA.

A new tank is in the works. It will be something much different–and smaller! Until then..

Short Film ‘Exotic Fish’ Shares the Addiction

Sean Conaty and Scion AV have put together this incredible clip that shares our addiction with the outside world. Peppermint Angelfish Captured on Video

This is currently the only publicly available video, of the one living Peppermint Angelfish (Paracentropyge boylei). The clip was taken by the rightful owner of the fish, Mr. Uragami of Nagoya, Japan. We thank him for sharing his highly prized Angel.

Little has changed with this aquarium. That alone is likely a driver of this fish’s successful captive life over the past decade. Little ambient light, dual chillers (@ 68-71F), and barren rock work make this little Peppermint Angel feel right at home.

You may notice in the video that the Peppermint is missing a bit of its dorsal. We’re not certain what happened, but such damage could easily come for an overzealous cleaner shrimp. The tissue loss is pretty deep, exposing a lot of the 11th dorsal spine. We hope this little guy can heal up.

1″ Juvie Bandit Is A Great Example of A. arcuatus

Here’s some more eye candy for the drooling angelfish fans. This 2.7cm juvenile Bandit Angel is alert, curious and a great example of the species (Apolemichthys arcuatus). At just over 1″, this fish ought to adapt very well to aquarium conditions, provided its fast metabolism is paired with a near constant source of food. We’re not joking about the constant part… these little guys are pigs.

Everyday the staff, at the great video sharing site Vimeo, pick the films they like ‘the bestest’. Last week, this amazing video of the Georgia Aquarium, made by Stillmotion received the honor.

Missed Some Reef Talks? GIRS Has You Covered

In case you did not attend MACNA, RAP or the myriad of other reef shows across the world, the Greater Iowa Reef Society (GIRS) has graciously shared videos from their Spring Fest event and regular meetings on Vimeo. This past spring brought in one of our own, John Coppolino, as well as Kevin Kohen.

//Update: That was short lived. Apparently these videos were not intended to be made public and have since been made private to GIRS members. While we respect that individuals giving their talks should have control over the distribution of these videos, we also extremely value free information exchange. Another time, another place.

When it comes to fish, you’ll be hard pressed to find people with more hands on experience than these two–never mind their knack for caring for the rare and unusual.

The Best Deepwater Collection Video You’ll Find

Leave it to Rich Pyle and BBC to present this amazing video. Watch as Rich, Brian Greene and John Earle collect some unbelievably rare fish at 120m in the waters of Palau. It appears this footage is back from April, 2007 when Centropyge abei was collected along with Chromis abyssyus. Around that time John Earle uploaded a video showing these same fish.

In the BBC clip you can see they also collected two Prognathodes sp. (Bababei). And don’t forget about that striking Tsoanoides anthias as well–looks to be Tosanoides flavofasciatus.

And if that video got your rare fish addiction going, be sure to check out this snippet from BBC where Rich, Brian, and John show off some more fish. It’s what we believe to be just the second online video of the striking Dr. Seuss Fish (Belonaperca pylei). The first would go to John Earle with this dive video!
