You say mutant, I say designer.

Which ever side you find yourself on, this ethical debate on “designer” clownfish is not ending anytime soon. In the just released July / August issue of CORAL, Matt Wittenrich lays out the single best history of mutant designer clownfish you’ll find to date. Matt provides plenty of points from both “groups” on this issue, while still emphasizing their importance to our past and future in this hobby.

This quote from ORA’s Dustin Dorton summarizes the situation well: “Without clownfish, and without designer clownfish specifically, revenue would not have been available to develop commercial techniques for more challenging species like mandarins.”

I dont understand the opposition really. the patterns found on designer clowns are found in the wild as well, maybe not as often but it does happen. I have a pair of picasso's now.

Don't know why anyone would fuss. Over the long term it will be like breeds of dogs. Lot of patterns will emerge with lack of natural predators.

“You say mutant, I say designer.”

      And I say marketing frame.

Plus, wouldn't they just be considered a variety of color morphologies, far less genetically manipulative than the breeding selection that goes on in dogs and horses and goldfish.
