EcoTech Marine has just released their newly redesigned Vortech Battery Back Up for their acclaimed line of aquarium pumps. From the early days of the first Vortech MP40, a battery back up system has been offered. The original battery powered emergency system was designed by the lighting and electrical gurus at IceCap Inc. and offered in conjunction with Vortech pumps through a unique partnership with EcoTech Marine. Now EcoTech has taken the battery back up in-house, redesigning the internals to allow better performance and more options for users.

The new Vortech battery back up comes with two spare cables allowing multiple Vortech pumps to be powered by one battery, at a reduced run time, or to link the batteries together to extend the run time. In addition EcoTech has beefed up the charger, also allowing longer run times. Many aquarists will appreciate these changes and the price–$165. Yes, despite the improvements, the new Vortech battery back up has the same price tag as the original. In fact the price tag and metal housing may be the only thing the two have in common.

“By bringing the Battery Backup accessory in-house, we can now better control the availability and final quality of this critical piece of reef tank insurance,” said Tim Marks, President of EcoTech Marine. Last we spoke with Tim he was extremely excited to offer this emergency life saver to Vortech owners. “…It might take a typhoon to destroy a natural reef, but for our captive reefs it only takes a power outage.”

    It's about time!

@thedogfather - considering how much a Vortech pump costs, the battery backup's price isn't that bad. Now, take into consideration how much you've spent on your livestock, the cost is a drop in the bucket!

@ Mike- well, you could use a computer UPS to try to do so. I had success with using them with my Tunzes when I used them. Just bear in mind, many pumps cannot start on the modified "square" sine wave they put out, and need a "true" sine wave. Also, things such as heaters are current hogs, and will quickly deplete a battery. But, to get back to your query, you can quite easily find something to do what you might be looking for.

However, with any battery system, or backup system, make sure you test them, and test them often. There is a catastrophe waiting to happen if they dont work (for whatever reason) when theyre supposed to.

It would be nice if someone made these for general use that you can plug anything in to, not just for vortechs. I know theyre out there but never have been able to find something simple for sale that you just plug up and it will work if the power goes out.

I'm with TheDogFather here...I'd love to have one, whether old or new, but it's too high for me. I wonder if there's any chance that with the advent of the new version, maybe the IceCap version will be sold cheaper until supplies are sold off. That would be nice.

I own the older ice cap model and although I don't agree with the high price point for the backup battery it will give you peace of mind knowing your tank will continue to have life saving flow when the power goes out...

Ecotech, please consider a more reasonable price point for the battery backup. I'm sure you will sell a lot more of them if you do!
