This video hit our inbox compliments of Glassboxer Nick S. Despite being aware of this species (Bathypterois grallator) and seeing it in photos, these videos take the Tripod Fish to an entirely new level.

Fishbase sheds some light on this deepwater, bathydemersal species:

“Perches on substrate with the aid of specialized fin rays (tripod), facing the current. Feeds on nektonic copepods and other small planktonic crustaceans. Synchronously hermaphroditic”

Videos like these provide terrific evidence on why Ocean Conservation is so important. What else is out there? What have we already lost?

I could watch deepwater video footage 24/7…it’s such a cool concept that there’s this whole underwater dream world with alien-like creatures that live every day on the planet with us, but in such a grossly different habitat.

Wouldn’t it be beyond amazing to go on one of those expeditions? Not to make light of cancer in any way, but that would definitely be my Make A Wish Foundation request. I can’t imagine anything more unique and magical.
