ReefRay’s Coral Shine is the latest LED aquarium light to hit Japan. The small pendant fires light from 18 Cree XR-E LEDs drawing 3w each for a total of 54w, plus driver losses. The units come in three standard color temperatures using cool white and royal blue LEDs: 100% White, 50W/50B and 100% Blue. Custom color temps are available for our Japanese readers–this will usually cost an additional $200USD, but is offered free until October 31, 2010. The 20 x 12.5 x 5cm fixture is quite small and packs in a large heatsink and fan to keep operating temperatures in range. The Coral Shine LED pendant is also available in 8 colors from black to bubble gum pink. Check out the orange unit below with Hideki’s hand as a size reference.

With a suggested retail price of ¥92,400 ($990 USD) we don’t expect these lights to become popular outside of Japan–where lights such as the popular MT 250 sell for prices nearing $1,500 USD. So why are we covering it? This is one of the first high powered LED lights from Japan, a country that has always taken a unique approach to aquarium lighting, that we believe will have the intensity to grow corals on its own. Keep an eye out for more “applicable” Japanese LED aquarium lights in the near future.
