Sometimes natural selection doesn’t strike immediately and apparently neither do some of the world’s most venomous creatures. Case in point, watch as this man “cool mike” casually fondles the highly venomous Blue Ringed Octopus . Keep in mind that there is no known antidote to the Blue Ring’s fierce neurotoxin. Watch as the Octopus swims away and the begging to be bitten hands catch it before it can make an escape.

Based on the video owner’s supposed location in Indonesia this species is likely the Greater Blue-Ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena lunulata). Just to be on the safe side, we don’t advise touching them. But hey, they’re CUTE!!!!

I have a right mind to fly to Indonesia and punch that jackhole in the neck. Imbecile.

Some people never really know how close they have come to death.

A bite is survivable without an anti-venom. It leads to short term paralysis, so if you have someone give you CPR (or you make it to a hospital) you can survive, you just have to be kept alive until the venom wears off. Regardless, the guy is a tool, and some day he will get bit and likely die.

Are blue-rings more aggressive because I’ve handled other octopuses and never been chomped.

i believe the word you were looking for is “octopi”

nope, it’s octopuses, actually more correctly octopodes, octopi is incorrect, but beside the point. Nothing suggests that blue rings are more aggressive, especially since there have never been any proven cases of death by blue ring and only three cases of suspected death by blue ring. I don’t think letting the octo crawl on your hands is the stupidest thing as there’s really nothing provoking it to bite if it’s just crawling on your hands, but grabbing it as it swims away… either way, not something I would do, lol.

I think what this exemplar isn´t a baby, but yes an adult. But will be what is the most venomous of the three species? The other two species are The Lesser blue ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena maculosa) and The Blue Lined octopus (Hapalochlaena fasciata). This species of the video is The Greater Blue ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena lunulata) more commonly encountered in the Indo-Pacific, of the Japan to Australia. Will be the most venomous species?

Hard to believe but an animal of this what should heigh a little over 10 cm is more venomous than any land animal, which is more poisonous than a King Cobra that can heigh 6m or almost a Taipan, the most venomous land snake in the world. To get an idea, the LD-50 or the Median Lethal Dose of poison this little animal is equivalent to 0.004 mg / kg, ie, this is so toxic that a single drop can not be seen with the naked eye, and a single bite, he injects a minimmum dose of it, I do not know if it’s true, but say the bad language, is sufficient to kill 26 adult humans.

I was just in Lombok and found one of these on the reef at low tide. One of the locals who collect food on the reef everyday assured me it was not poisonous and laughed at me when I said not to touch it. His son then picked it up and it crawled up his hand flashing its blue rings. There are obviously non-venomous species of the blue- ring octopus in indonesia.

The fact is what all species of blue rings are very shy and rarelly bite, specially Hapalochlaena lunulata. But the fact is what all species of blue rings, without exception, are deadly poisonous specially because of TTX (tetraodotoxin) present in your bodies. Some specialists say what the TTX levels varies in populations of different localities.
