Making a refugium or lagoonal display tank is not necesarily a new idea, but few people actually execute on the display portion. From what I have seen, it  typically becomes a standard refugium or the temptation is too great to create a full blown reef. I think that’s why I love this open topped rimless aquarium from Aqua System Japan. The tank is marketed under the name Crystal Terra, referencing its use as a terrarium, but we’d rather see this design be put to use as a marine vivarium or paludarium.

It may not be the most practical when it comes to water volume, but it would allow a unique mangrove display that focused equally on the plant and the animals living among its roots. As the image above suggests, these are marketed for the freshwater planted crowd… but that wouldn’t stop a creative reefer now would it?

Getting these shipped from Japan is impractical, but we have seen similar designs offered for sale in North America and Europe. Additionally, with the low water height, this is something that could be created by a DIY savvy reefer–make it rimless and get some mangroves!

what are the dimensions on this thing? very cool, liking the mangrove/lagoon concept

I'm curious on the dimensions too actually. Given the right size you could create an awesome shoreline and fringe drop aquascape using this tank. Like, mound the sand against the back wall and have the front maybe 1/2 of the tank as a small fringe. Would look incredible, especially if combined with as you've said, Eric, mangroves of some kind.

Love tanks that aren't just (excuse the pun) regular ol' glass boxes anymore. It opens up the doors for so much more in terms of innovative aquascape and tank design.
