Hanna Instruments has recently come out with their new sub $50 Checker phosphate (PO4) colorimeter. It has yet to make much of a splash in the marine aquaria world, but we have a feeling that will soon change after Hanna confirmed with us that this colorimeter will work with saltwater water samples.

    Hanna Checker Colorimeter:

    • Works in Saltwater
    • 0.0-2.5 ppm range
    • 0.01 ppm resolution
    • Offers accuracy of +/- .04 ppm, +/- 4% of reading @ 25C
    • Powered by (1) AAA Battery
    • Auto-shutoff after 2 minutes
    • 10ml glass cuvettes

The hobby’s go-to phosphate colorimeter has long been the Hanna HI 93713 which will set you back roughly $170 USD. When comparing this to the $49 Hanna Checker it seems silly to even consider the HI 9373–they both offer the same resolution, accuracy and range, while the new Checker costs 4 times less.

The biggest con for the HI 9373 has always been price and accuracy. $170 is a lot of money to pay for water readings that may be 0.1ppm or 0.5ppm. The Checker’s +/- 0.04ppm range is equally large, but the pricetag is drastically lower. If tests are done in a controlled and repeatable manner, this affordable colorimeter will allow aquarists to easily benchmark their phosphate levels without breaking the bank or pulling out a color wheel. Current pricing is $40 at various online stores or $49.50 with free shipping direct from Hanna. Meanwhile, reagents are priced at $8.99 for 25.

Despite the praise that colorimeters get, remember they are not necessarily more accurate than titration kits. Still, considering the lack of options in low range phosphate testing this is a welcome addition to an aquarists testing arsenal.

    via Hanna:

Easier to use and more accurate than chemical test kits Adaptation of Standard Method 4500-P E Accuracy 4% ±0.04 ppm (mg/L) of reading 0.04 ppm (mg/L) resolution (250 points) Large, easy to read digits Auto shut-off. Dedicated to a single parameter Designed to work with HANNA’s powder reagents Uses 10 mL glass cuvettes. Small Size, Big Convenience Weighing a mere 65 g (2.3 oz.), the Checker®HC easily fits into the palm of your hand or pocket.Use for quick and accurate on the spot analysis. Single button operation: Zero and Measure Operated by a single AAA battery. Ideal for Natural, waste and drinking waters.

    ACCURATE AND AFFORDABLE PHOSPHATE MEASUREMENT

Orthophosphates are found in natural and waste waters. They are commonly added to drinking water as a corrosion inhibitor. The instantaneous analysis of orthophosphate by colorimetric determination provides rapid results using a standard analysis technique. The HANNA HI 713 Checker®HC bridges the gap between simple chemical test kits and professional instrumentation. Chemical test kits are not very accurate and only give 5 to 10 points resolution while professional instrumentation can cost hundreds of dollars and can be time consuming to calibrate and maintain. The HANNA HI 713 Checker®HC is accurate and affordable. The HI 713 Checker®HC portable handheld colorimeter features a resolution of 0.01 ppm (250 points) and 4% ±0.04 accuracy of reading. The HI 713 Checker® HC uses an adaptation of Standard Method 4500-P E. The contoured style of this Checker®HC fits in your palm and pocket perfectly and the large LCD is easy to read. The auto shut-off feature assures the battery life will not be drained if you forget to turn it off. The HI 713 Checker®HC is extremely simple to use. First, zero the instrument with your water sample. Next, add the reagent. Last, Place the vial into the HI 713 Checker®HC, press the button and read the results. It’s that easy.

Hey Eric…do you know if any of your sponsors are carrying this yet? I'd love to have one! That pricetag is right in my range!!!

Is the accuracy 0.4ppm or 0.04 ppm?

Great to see this come out, finally be able to replace my HI 9373 that was “borrowed” and not returned… the accuracy still bugs me though, but as you mentioned, at least we get a benchmark.

@ Jim, it's 0.04 ppm. 0.4 ppm would really render this useless.

Awesome! Putting in my order for one right away! I haven't tested my PO4 in years so it will be interesting to see what it comes up with.

Austin – just double checking. The article above indicated both.
