Giesemann has recently launched their IQ Nano aquarium, aimed at the freshwater plated and nano-reef crowd. The tank itself measure in at 400 x 400 x 400mm (16.74″) holding roughly 17 gallons (65 liters) of water. The IQ features a built in overflow and return, both of which are drilled through the bottom and can connect via soft tubing to an optional sump. The stand is your typical highgloss MDF construction, availabile in white and wenge, measuring in at at 35.5″ (900mm) tall and fitting flush with the 400m tank. There is no doubt that the IQ looks great, but if you took away the white back wall, I would swear this was an Elos Mini. The proportions and stand are eerily familiar. On one hand, it’s difficult to argue with a new attractive aquarium system, but on the other do something new.
Overall the wenge finish, back wall turned light rack and the Nano MH + T5 upgrade are welcome additions to the aquarium world, but they will cost you. The tank, stand, and NANO 4 x 8w T5 light fixture are retailing for €999 or $1,413 USD. Enthusiast looking to improve the perfomance can upgrade to the Light Package I for €209 ($295USD) which replaces the 4 x 8w T5 unit and packs 1 x 70w Metal Halide and 2 x 8w T5 in a tasteful aluminum Giesemann fixture–we hope this light becomes available independent of the IQ.
On top of this, a Marine package is available which makes this system a plug’n'play nano reef, complete with a sump, RowaPhos, Return Pump and Deltec MCE300 skimmer. This tacks on an additional €369 ($522USD) bringing the total Giesemann IQ Marine Package to €1,577 or $2,230USD–making this the most expensive production model nano aquarium in the industry.
The first photos hands on photos we’ve seen of the new Giesemann IQ aquarium are from German Shop Bloggers Gamba. Check out their blog for more images of their recently set-up planted tank. We have yet to here anything concrete on U.S. distribution. Meanwhile, Giesemann is trying very hard to promote and recruit retailers of the IQ in Europe. Check out the e-mail below which was passed on to GBD from a European shop owner announcing the aquarium’s availability.
