In the not so distant future companies will begin tracking shipments with near-real-time data and vital stats on their package, such as temperature or tempering with a package. This is capable thanks to FedEx’s new SenseAware module, described as a ‘quad band world phone’. This innovation will allow web based tracking in which users can set alerts and notices–ultimately enabling FedEx customers to make real time decisions for their precious cargo, such as changing destinations or re-routes. A serious benefit when shipping time sensitive items–such as live marine fish and inverts.

    fedex sense aware

Back in 2009 FedEx SenseAware was under going a trial period with 50 health care companies, and estimated to become publicly available in Spring 2010. SenseAware has since been pushed back to a summer 2010 launch, but they are currently accepting company interest forms via their website. The program was originally estimated to cost businesses $120 a month which includes the webservice and a undisclosed amount of devices.

We’re unsure how FedEx reuses the senseaware devices, but the idea is certainly innovative. If pricing is low enough it may provide a new wave of shipping insurance for the industry I wouldn’t buy a Paracentropyge boylei without one.

    Thanks Rob
