Elos will be rolling out a range of new lighting products in 2010, the first being their line up of Spectra Chrome bulbs. These new lamps will come in 10K Tropical, 14K Coral and 20K Abyss flavors in 150w DE, 250w DE, 250w SE and 400w SE formats. These lamps are made in Germany and feature UV stop coating on both the DE and SE models. Note that it is still recommended to run a glass shield when using the double ended lamps.
The packaging for the Spectra Chrome line is up to PAR with Elos standards. Not only is the box easy on the eyes, inside comes a sticker to remind users of bulb replacement, a glove to keep your oils off the lamp, and in case the glove does not keep everything at bay–a bottle of brighty glow, an alcohol based bulb cleaner that will remove any oils.

Don’t be surprised to see the Elos 20K Abyss become popular in the U.S.. This lamps has a strong 450nm peak to pop colors, with warmer peaks to prevent a monochromatic blue wash that can occur with some 20K+ halides. Early users are comparing it to the Radium 20K ‘with more punch’.
European reefers tend to gravitate towards the crisp 14K look and this Elos’ lamp of choice when supplementing with T5s. They describe their 14K Coral metal halide lamp as truly crisp white with a hint of blue.
Prices are reasonable and identical for 14K & 20K versions. Only a few people have their hands on these lamps, with the next shipment expected to arrive at retailers this week.
- 150w DE $75.95
- 250w DE & SE $93.95
- 400w SE $106.95
