Dan Flavin’s “Re-imagining Architecture with Fabricated Light” series inadvertently portrays blue dominated reef lighting well. It was just about the blues; now suddenly it’s the pinks.
After the success of the KZ Fiji Purple and the just-off-the-mark ATI ProCoral, pink is becoming the new actinic–that is after actinic became the new daylight.
D-D / Giesemann has introduced a new T5 lamp dubbed the AquaPink Powerchrome lamp. DD states this pink tube is designed to “enhance and promote” coral color, noting its especially effective on blue and pink species. No real surprise there, look at the spectral peaks!

As reader JR showed us upon sharing news on the ATI Purple Plus, D-D came out with their pink tube at nearly the same time. The spectral plots are also eerily similar. Same lamp? We don’t know. The AquaPink PowerChrome has a higher relative intensity in the 450 range, but ATI has also inconveniently smoothed their data points.
If they are different, we’re curious which one will outperform the other and how they stack up against the Fiji. As always, predications, insights and bookie odds appreciated.
