Generic, cast aluminum LED spotlights are here compliments of Aqua Medic’s AquaSunSpot LED spotlights. It was only a matter of time until aquarium companies started bringing in these cast style PAR style LED spots. They are incredibly cheap and there are literally hundreds of factories and distributors marketing these throughout Asia.

Now we cant say where exactly where AquaMedic’s lights are made–but the style of led spotlight and the actual images look just like those from any other Opto Electronic Co. in Shenzhen. Case in point, see the image below which was sent to use from a factory in China. Similar images are found all over trade websites such as Alibaba.

We live in a globalized world. Let me clarify that there is absolutely nothing wrong with where a piece of equipment is made, whether that is in America, Germany, China, or India–as long as the price and quality are inline. If priced and made well, the AquaSunSpot LED lamp will be another simple option for aquarists looking to accent their aquarium. Now to wait and see that where the price tag ends up.

Here’s what AquaMedic has to say about their new spotlight:

aquasunspot [sic] are constructed using 1 watt power LED´s. The combination of white (10,000 K) and blue LED’s results in a perfect colour spectrum for coral reef aquariums. The light efficiency is c. 90 lumen/watts.

aquasunspot 3 can be used in standard light fittings usually used for 12 V (~ or=) halogen lamps with a 2 pin socket (GU 5,3). aquasunspot 7 and aquasunspot 12 can be used in light fittings using the E27 socket; aquasunspot 12 is also compatible with PAR lamps.

    aquasunspot 7 W, Ø 9.2 cm, 5 white/2 blue, art.-no.: 83314007
    aquasunspot 12 W, Ø 12 cm, 8 white/4 blue, art.-no.: 83314012

More choice in this category of lighting is great. I've had fantastic changes in growth and general tank health since situation from MH to LED.

I think the real problem with these spotlights is the lack of good fixture options available for mounting them over aquariums. Track lighting is a finicky DIY job at best, and retrofitting other home lighting fixtures isn't a great solution either.

I think there is a lot of room for classic reef company innovation.

I was really hoping to see some violet, purple, or red LED options coming from these guys, or at least some disclosure on which blue color they're using. I would be happy with the option of utilizing 2 different blue LEDs, if purple/violet weren't available. Hopefully they offer those in the future – til then, I'll stick with my existing PAR38's.

I ABSOLUTELY agree with Nat. I'd love to try LED spotlights, but am not sure where or which fixture is appropriate to house them. I'd have definitely tried them by now if not for that little roadblock. The answer may be simple, but I don't know what it is.

Like you said Eric, there is nothing wrong with where they are made, but all I see is yet another uninspired product. I guess it will suffice for some, but where is the innovation? Where's the passion?

@Nick, have you seen these arms that Michael Lukaczyn uses on his tank?

Thanks so much Matt…I absolutely had not seen them, but that would be exactly the type of fixture I’d be looking for. My only problem with that specific one is that I don’t think the clamp would fit around the trim or whatever it’s called around the aquarium since it’s a 125 gallons. I can fit the JBJ Viper clamps on it, but it literally pushes them to almost the breaking point. The one on your link is exactly the type I need though…just with a bigger tank clamp. Thanks again for that, Matt!
