ORA Red Planet Gets LED Treatment, Will it Grow Under a 3w Blue LED?

As more and more data is released on LED aquarium lights there are still many who strongly believe they cannot grow SPS corals. On paper there should not be a problem, but for some the numbers are not enough. While not a true test, I was curious myself to see what type of coral growth would occur under royal blue LED dominated light that aquarists are quickly falling in love with. Additionally, I hope to highlight the idea of spotlighting. The light shown here is an effective solution for nano reef keepers wanting to keep SPS in their moderately lit aquarium, without the added heat and electrical costs that often accompany other lighting technology.

The light chosen is an unbranded LED Spotlight I received direct from a manufacturer in China. The light screws into your standard household socket and powers a single Luxeon III Royal Blue LED, consuming just 3w of electricity. The light is extremely focused using a tight optic that creates a very clean beam of light.

To observe this I chose a readily available and colorful captive propagated coral–the ORA Red Planet. This coral has been in captivity long enough that we have a good idea of its shape and coloration. It also fluoresces well showing off its red and green pigments under ~450nm LED light.

    ORA Red Planet

This ORA Red Planet is being grown under T5s in the aquarium of Mike Clifford.

I could not dedicated a separate tank for the individual coral, so it will receive a bit more than just 3 watts of LEDs. It has been placed in the rear corner of the glassbox where only incidental light spill occured. PAR measurements here range from 20 to a peak of 80 micromoles/m2/sec at ‘mid day’.  The coral is attached to the overflow box at 7″ below the surface. The light is clipped onto the edge of the aquarium with the lens just 1″ above the water. This provides a PAR increase of roughly 170 micromoles/m2/sec.

While far from a controlled experiment we love to tinker we’re curious to see how this particular coral grows under this spotlight. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more updates.

…..o.0 lots of people on nano-reef.com have grown sps under led bulbs….just saying, its completely doable and has been done, including red planet. :) go drool over some of the led sps tanks, theres quite a few.

Nano-reef does have some diy led guys with sweet led set ups, but I like this test by GBD.

None of the nano guys have tanks that can compare with bigger halide or t5 set ups like in RC's best SPS tanks in the world thread!

I've been growing SPS (including red planet ) under LEDs for the last year, I've seen similar growth compared with a MH/T5 pairing.

Should be an interesting test. Not many people realize that royal blue LEDs produce a lot of PAR. Just about as much as white LEDs do. The PAR levels you were measuring are most likely low, as the Apogee meter reads low on the blue end.

Agreed–the focused spectra of LEDs makes them more difficult to test. I'm sure estimates could be made for better calibration… Ideally, PAR measurements for each major wavelength (for white + blue combos) would be measured and calibrated from there.

I am looking forward to the growth and coloration comparisons to Mike's t5's.

You really got me excited that you already HAD results.

I am curious how this scales up to larger tanks, it seems the coral is quite close to the surface, what if you wanted to do a similar effect on something lower in the tank. I've thought of spotlighting particular rocks with LEDs simply so I don't need to have a ton of light over the whole tank, mostly illuminating the bottom of my tank.

Cant wait to see the progress, when can we look forward to the review of evil's led screw in?

      Hello,

Firstly thank you for your blog is a wealth of information on the latest in the world of marine aquariums.
Then I wonder if this is a problem that I have translated your article on LED lighting in french and that I have placed on our site?

If you have problems let us know and we will remove it.

Any updates– would I find them here or somewhere else?

I'll have some up soon… the coral is coloring up and beginning to encrust.

      Hello,

Any news about this experience ?

      Thank you.
      Sam.

Cool, thanks. Sorry it took so long for me to notice your reply.

I just got a Red Planet frag and I'm using a combo of a 250DE Phoenix along with a bunch of royal blue Cree XRE's. I've only had it a couple days so it's just getting over the transport and mounting stress.

This one is very nice and useful technique and good information of using LED light. The LED light is screws into standard socket and powers a single blue LED and electricity. This one light is focused very clean light.

LED spotlight mainly used for outdoor activity like Gardening, park security etc. Even i am still using spot LED light for gardening which saving my monthly maintenance.

I have been raising a red planet SPS in a 90g that is lighted with 4 AI Sol Blues and the coral looks awesome.
