The first ever World Reef Conference was planned for October 3rd and 4th in 2009, but WRC 09 has now been pushed back to 2010. I spoke with a few vendors and on multiple occasions I was told they were unsure if they’d be exhibiting– simply because (a) it was not on their radar and (b) budgets had been reduced in response to the economy. Given consumer’s reluctance to spend money on such luxury events and the relatively low turn out of IMAC West, I believe this was a responsible move by the WRC team.
This event is being put on by the Chicago Marine Aquarium Society and H.H. Backer Associates, who are responsible for the infamous Backer industry trade show. Despite the one year delay, we have high hopes for it in 2010. (See the initial WRC 09 plan here)
If you already signed up, WRC will be refunding all monies. The official press release is below.
CHICAGO, Ill. (August 8, 2009)–The Chicago Marine Aquarium Society (CMAS) announced that the World Reef Conference has been rescheduled. CMAS and H.H. Backer Associates will co-locate their events at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont (Chicago), Ill., in October 2010.
The WRC Steering committee recommended the change in dates, which will allow for far greater participation from both marine aquatic vendors and conference attendees. In recent weeks, we have spoken with numerous potential exhibitors who wish to participate in WRC, but are unable to because of current budget restraints. Boyd Corbett, WRC Co-Chair, stated that the change in dates is a fiscally responsible move that will insure maximum participation at World Reef Conference 2010.
We wish to thank all of the reef hobbyists and exhibitors who have registered for World Reef Conference. Any monies submitted will be cheerfully refunded within the next ten days. CMAS is also in contact with all of the WRC speakers to insure that they will be available to participate in the rescheduled event.
CMAS is optimistic that 2010 will be a terrific year for the marine aquatic hobby and we are looking forward to seeing all of you at the World Reef Conference in October, 2010!
