Jim @ Unrulymck has posted some interesting photos showing VSV eradicating red cyano bacteria in a matter of hours. Cyano and carbon dosing is a very sensitive situation because cyano can utilize carbon sources like vodka and sugar. When dosing any carbon source in the presence of cyano there is a very fine line of encouraging rapid growth or quickly eradicating. Highly unscientific, but in my experience when a mature nutrient reducing bacteria population is established it can quickly out compete cyano, as Jim shows in his blog post. To be completely honest, I’ve never personally had a real cyano issue (knock on wood). Point being, cyano can be eliminated and controlled by other methods. Carbon dosing should not be used as a means to eliminate cyano. Nor should oxidizing agents or antibiotics, in my opinion.
