The release of a T5 Tek Light with fans has been discussed for over a year now. Design wise this move is a must for Sunlight Supply, the manufacturer of Tek Lights, if they wish to capture a larger market share of light hungry reef aquarists.  ”Active cooled”  fixtures like the ATI Sunpower and Powermodule easily out perform the original Tek light that lacked fans. This gap in performance will likely narrow  with the Tek Light Elite T5 fixtures that features active cooling and a splash shield which forces the air blown into the fixture (via fan) to pass across the ballast and then across the lamps. In addition to this change Sunlight Supply has switched to reflectors made from a 98% reflective material from Alanod Almeco.

Based on the photos above the fixture hasn’t changed much at all. It’s fairly simple, but does lack some of the refinement that other fixtures offer–e.g. the fan vent on top.

Expected pricing without bulbs is below:

  • 4 x 36″ – 36″ pricing TBA
  • 4 x 48″ $358
  • 6 x 48″ $473
  • 8 x 48″ $578

This puts the Tek Light Elite just under the ATI Sunpower. For comparison the 4 x 48″ model retails at $420 making the Sunpower roughly 17% more expensive. A considerable amount more, but we have a feeling that PAR and not price alone will be the real deal breaker.
