Stunning Molten Red Chalice Will Make You Drool

I am not much a Chalice person. The colors are jaw dropping. However, the 1-mouth fragging concept can turn me off quickly. I am not much a Chalice person. The colors are jaw dropping. However, the 1-mouth fragging concept can turn me off quickly. I am a large advocate of coral propagation, but when coral vitality is sacrificed for branding and monies, the ‘application’ of propagation can lose its value. This is not the case for all chalice / LPS fragments, just that the current craze is surfacing examples of this.

This is also not the case for this stunning red chalice, arguably the most beautiful I’ve seen–and a colony for real visual enjoyment. This large piece was purchased from LiveAquaria’s Diver’s Den and it is not going to be fragged anytime soon.

The quick photo I snapped off does not do this piece justice, but hopefully provides a representation of what had us drooling. The mixture of reds, pinks, purples, blues and grays looked like paint mixed and swirled for a chromatic juxtaposition like no other. This piece is owned by an LPS collector-extraordinaire in the greater Chicago  area.

That pic is good but really doesn’t do it justice — if I were the owner I’d remain anonymous too to try and keep the chalynch mob from showing up at my house :)

That is a an awesome chalice! The only downside of a coral like that is when people frag them you get a sliver that will take years to grow to a decent size. Unfortunately they are one of the slowest growers I have seen.

Wow, great looking chalice! I’d never frag that piece either ;-)

@Gary, I’d love to see you provide some photographic justice to that coral.

@Sara / Brandon, True story. You’d have to be crazy to cut that beauty up.
