Travis, a reader of GBD brought the Spire Pacific Breeze PC Fan to our attention via the comments, and after looking into it sure does look awfully similar to the Tunze Aquawind. We always found it peculiar that the Aquawind came with blue LEDs and a USB port, but now it’s beginning to make a bit more sense.
Tunze Aquawind mounted on a rimless aquarium.
It is worth pointing out that the $75 Aquawind comes with a mounting system that allows you to mount the fan on the edge of your aquarium and a 5V USB adapter, while the Spire Pacific Breeze does not. Whether this is actually custom manufactured or added on by Tunze is yet to be determined; some hands on comparisons will need to be done. Also remember that the Spire unit does not come with Tunze’s great Customer Service. Still at $20 the Spire Pacific Breeze Fan has become popular in the laptop PC world and it may not be a bad purchase for aquarists looking to cool their aquarium while going easy on the wallet.
A 5V USB power supply is needed for the Pacific Breeze and can be purchased for under $10 bringing this 2x DC Ball Bearing fan unit to roughly $30. Given the low profile, both the hassle free Tunze or the DIY Spire Pacific Breeze look much better than many of the other fan options out on the market.
