The Polkadotted Hermit Crab (Phimochirus operculatus) is an Atlantic and Caribbean endemic rarely seen in the trade and often ignored by hobbyists. In Japan it is a sought after species that at one time command a very high price for its rarity in their markets. Thankfully for those in the America’s this species is close to home, but many are unaware of its existence. As such it can be dirt cheap like the Blue Leg Hermit Crab (Clibanarious tricolor), or expensive when represented as a unique invert.

These crabs feature long stalked eyes and a vibrant mix of scarlet, violet and white markings. They make a small, but attractive addition to most saltwater aquariums.

Phimochirus-operculatus

Phimochirus operculatus is a fast moving crab, characterized by its energetic and jerky movements when out and about in the aquarium.  It is without a doubt one of the quickest small hermits and quite entertaining when they are out. The Polkadotted Hermit can be aggressive towards their own kind, so keep this in mind when stocking multiples. Like most crabs P. operculatus is an omnivore and will be peaceful provided enough food can be found scavenging. Corals and sessile invertebrates may be on the menu if other foods are in short supply.

Disregard my previous comment. Now, as I look at the first picture, I can see that it is another claw, just one that looks grossly different from the smaller one. When I wrote my original comment I was only looking at the bottome picture and couldn't tell it was a claw...sorry about that.

What is the appendage that is opposite his one claw? I've never seen a hermit with a nub like that instead of just 2 claws...then again, I'm not too well versed in hermits at all.
