ORA Blue Iris

We’ve just been informed that ORA has released a new captive propagated coral named the Blue Iris. We are a bit bummed to see another green with blue tip Acropora from ORA. Many of their corals fit this color scheme with similar bottle brush growth (Roscoes, Joe the Coral, Bellina…) However, we have hope for this Blue Iris species. Notice the elongated coralites? It’s too early to say given the small size of the coral fragments, but there is the possibility that this species is Acropora echinata–an all time favorite here at GBD.

This species is best known thanks to the beautiful Ice Fire echinata, one of the few “true echinatas” on the market that are not A. speciosa or A. turaki. For some Ice Fire eye candy, see this photo via Unarce & Exotic Frags. The photo from ORA is not the most alluring. The obvious low kelvin emphasizes the green and golden brown color at the base, while de-emphasizing the violet-blue tips. Someone get this Acropora under 20ks.

[Thanks Sean!]

  • @Ian... well said. It looks very similar to an Ice Fire I had growing out under 400w 'sakis

Either way, a lot of people seem disappointed about this release. In my opinion that's what the icefire would look under 6500k. I think once it's seen under 14-20k, people will change their minds...

I think you mean Borealis, not Bellina. Bellina is purple with green polyps, Borealis looks like Joe and Roscoes.
