Octopus has continued the development of their new Super Reef Octopus XP cone skimmer line with the XP-2000 Ext Cone Skimmer. The XP-2000 cone is powered by Honya’s OEM bubble blaster pump which is capable of 85 scfh of air intake at roughly 50 watts of electric consumption. This skimmer has the potential to handle some serious bioload.

We’re left asking ourselves, why the large flag pole air silencer? The same could be achieved with a much smaller inline muffler, or one attached directly to the collection cup or gate valve. On another note, when will see a new skimmer color? Our vote’s for a flip flop on the white body color and Sch 80 plumbing. Not convinced? Check out the imaginative Matrix Skimmer.

is it a silencer or a “kill switch” to stop overflow of the skimmer since it is external

Wow, octopus skimmer is getting better and better, very cool. I remembered Luke33 mentioned that if shorten the silicon tube, that would help skimmer suck in more air. but i’m not sure that could apply to this case since they have another smaller tube join at the top again. Hopefully Luke will see this message and share some infos.

I too worry about an external skimmer with a gate valve on the output, since it can easily overflow if the throughput changes (and this is likely). You can do what I did to mine though… just add on an external telescoping assembly, and leave the gate valve on the skimmer wide open. Heck, aftermarket telescoping standpipe kits would make for an interesting business venture…lol. But its really very easy to make the adapter from metric to US, and then make a U-pipe with a telescopic standpipe outlet. Its something I wish every external skimmer came with, but its not the end of the world.
