About a month or two ago, a good friend stopped in Tokyo, Japan while on a trip and was kind enough to bring me back some Japanese Aquarium & Design magazines. (While there he tried to go to Natural, one of the top LFS in Japan, but they were not yet open and he had to run to catch his flight. He did get to “window shop” while they had in a Whitecap Goby, a pair of Ryan’s captive bred Mccullochi Clowns, and some Fuscipinnis Anthias)
Back to the magazines. This aquarium mag was one that I have never heard or even seen mentioned online. It is called Interior Aquarium and completely caught me off guard. The popular Japanese aquarium magazines like Marine Aquarist, focus on rare fish and husbandry. Interior Aquarium is purely on aquarium aesthetics!
Shown above is an article on aquascaping nano reef aquariums. On the right hand page, up in the right hand corner you can see aquascape examples they suggest. Double click the photo to see it larger, and you can see how they execute the middle style using two islands. After the aquascape section, they suggest choosing fish & corals based on color choice. They even emphasis coral and plant placement by indirectly using the golden ratio. Here are a few of the vibrant and easier to care for specimens they suggest:
In addition to marine aquariums they cover freshwater planted tanks as well. They had a large article and interview with Takashi Amano, shown below.
Some small Wabi Kusa styles made there way into this “nano issue”.
Overall it’s a very cool magazine, even if you cannot read Japanese. I doubt it will make it’s way outside of Japan, but if you happen to see one pick it up. Their thoughts on aquarium placement and aquascaping are refreshing to see in print. The magazine also came with a DVD showing a beautiful soft coral and Centropyge dominated aquarium that is featured in the issue.
