17g rimless aquarium , 60 x 30 x 36cm ($95)
Freshwater planted specialist Green Leaf Aquariums, LLC has come out with a new line of minimalist rimless aquariums. GLA’s rimless tanks look to rival those of ADA with high clarity 5mm to 10mm thick glass and extremely precise silicone fillets. Fillets are the silicone seams that hold together the glass panes. Unlike most aquariums you see today, these tanks only use silicone to fill the small void between the panes of glass–and not slopped into the entire corner and smoothed using a wet finger!
In our opinion this is how tanks should be made, but very few do. Elos is one of the few tank makers known in the marine world that follows this principle–however, it’s not as easy as you would think. These tiny slivers of sealant are not your typical silicone.
12g rimless aquarium 91 x 21 x 24cm ($110)
For saltwater aquarists looking for a larger tank, GLA does offer a 45g tank (91 x 45 x 45cm) that retails for $360. Be aware that this tank features a tempered bottom pane for additional strength–meaning drilling for a traditional overflow is not possible.
Green Leaf’s Rimless aquariums are priced just under ADA’s. We cannot comment on how they compare in terms of longevity and strength, but based on images and initial reviews from the freshwater planted community, they look to be a nice alternative for all aquarists looking for a minimalist and modern aquarium.
