A new cone skimmer called the Taifun II is coming to market shortly from manufacturer Meerwasser Technik out of the reef mecca country, Germany. This company has marketed skimmers similar in design to the ATI Bubble Master and Fauna Marine Blue, but has improved upon their previous AS model with a full conical body while opting for a traditional, but more effective bubble plate design. The skimmer is powered by an AquaBee 2000/1 for 550lph of air injecting into a bubble plate for standard in-sump operation. Initial pricing is estimated to be $800 USD for the smallest model shown below.

The design does not provide anything new for US based aquarists, but potentially for those in Germany and parts of Europe. Given what we’ve seen take place in this cone craze it’s a tame entrance into the skimmer world, but the increased availability of molded cone bodies  has the potential to significantly change the market. With one conical skimmer patent granted and another in the works, it will be interesting to see how the cone craze spreads and how long it will last.

Update: GBD reader Stina stumbled across the model currently for sale on Ebay.de for  €599 under the name Taifun II, German for typhoon–which brings back memories of old Amiracle venturi designs in the early 90s. The auction by Azofi Remarketing states it is “100% made in Germany”.

@Stina, sure is. Thanks for the heads up, I’ve included it in the post. Also, edited your comment so the link fit in the text box.

This company has been around for some time now. I don’t remember the whole story but I think ATI went to this guy to design their skimmers and calcium reactors. This is before the Bubble Master days. ATI called it the Twister. I actually still have one of their calcium reactors. I always felt it was one of the best designs ever.

@Greg, I believe you’re right regarding the manufacturing. There are close ties, but I don’t have anything concrete. That is unless Oliver or Claude would like to chime in ;)

      @ Greg/Eric…

Klaus told me this a long time ago…

Mr. Klewinski, who IS meerwasser-technik developed those ‘Bubblemaster’ skimmers (AKA Ultra-Skim) and liscenced them to Fauna Marin/Claude. Fauna Marin was using them for a while, and ATI came along and pretty much copied the design. This is why Klaus calls ATI/Oliver a ‘copy shop’. So you could consider Mr. Klewinski the originator of the ‘Bubblemaster’ style skimmers. I dont think he came up with the cone though…lol. I would have to give that to KZ most likely (I doubt Klaus had anything functional/developed until recently, and initial reports are that the Alpha Cones arent that great… which further lead me to believe that anything with cones and RE was recent).

      Thanks for the clarification Jon.
