Aqua Medic’s new Spacelight EX Pendants have made their way to stores and online e-tailers this month. Overall the design is not drastically different than the popular Oceanlight unit. However, cleaner lines and the Reeflex cube, a US made magnetic ballast, separate the Spacelight line.

The 250w MH only unit measures in at 9.5″x12.5″x3.5″ while the 150w MH only unit slims down to 8″x9.5″x2.75″. With both sizes, the Reeflex Cube Ballast measure 7″ all around. These fixtures also come with 9.5′ cord from the fixture to the ballast, which allows discrete placement of the Reeflex cube.

While not a drastic visual improvement over the Oceanlight, the Spacelight has been refined while offering an improved ballast. Expect the Metal Halide + T5 Combos, with external T5 ballasts, to make their way to the U.S. shortly.

Pleasing design and plug-n-play. There’s not much to argue about beyond potential hotspots from a narrow reflector design. We’ll have to see how they perform on tanks and in testing.

The 150 and 250 watt units are currently retailing for $285 and $310 respectively. I expect these to sell well among the reef crowd. If you’re considering purchasing a Spacelight EX be sure to check out Premium Aquatics.
