The stones are stirred by a cambination of air (jumbo air pump needed/recommended), and (here comes the 'semi automatic tag') manual stirring of the zeo media... It's like saying: 'yeah ok, you should don't care about your zeo media subproduct being released... as long as you keep in all those stones up & down while the system is in 'auto' mode...sure it will pump some air to help you... There are several hurdles to overcome with this design. You can gear a small stepping motor to the shaft, but then you have shaft seal problems. The best is to just use a linear actuator, but there are other problems with this as well. There is a way to make it work though... hint: a retractable ballpoint pen.
