The Nano-Cube line of all-in-one aquariums has expanded via their new 28g Nano-Cube LED.  This aquarium features high intensity LEDs with an expected lifespan of 50,000 hours. When compared next to the Nano-Cube HQI standing right next to it at the Backer show, the coloration of the LED model was much more vivid and the glitter lines more pronounced. Underneath the ABS hood houses the following:

  • 25 x 3w White 14K LEDS
  • 4 x 3w 466nm LEDs (Actinic for Dawn / Dusk simulation)
  • 2 x 1w 456nm LEDs for Moon lighting

To steer away from the Orbitec LED patent, each of the 3 groups of LEDs have their own power cord allowing the user to time when they come on and off–but they cannot be dimmed. The white (14K)  and blue (466nm) LEDs are driven at 750mA while the moon lights are less intense at 350mA. Total electric consumption for the lighting is 89 watts. To help keep heat under control, 4 fans are installed in the hood that automatically come on when the lights are on.

The tank measures in at 18″ x 22″ x 22″, while the pedestal stand features the same footprint but stands 32″ tall. Unfortunately the stand is your typical MDF-Ikea aquarium stand. Nano-Cube has also upgraded their waterflow and filtration by utilizing two Accela SP1-1000 pumps which each put out 266gph. These can be connected to their Ocean-Pulse Duo wave maker to create some interesting on-off chaotic water motion, although we’d prefer the Vortech MP10 on this particular tank.  The filtration compartment is also large enough to fit a skimmer back there–based on what we saw a Tunze 9002 should slide right in, but don’t hold us to it. JBJ was utilizing their own air driven skimmer at the show.

The 28g Nano-Cube LED comes with a 1 year warranty and is expected to arrive at retailers this December. Pricing is said to be near $750 USD, but don’t be surprised for new-release sales. Many all-in-one aquariums can become death traps in the wrong hands–hopefully these upgrades will provide more success in the same plug-in-play package.

    I just remembered the other that I was thinking of, but I guess it depends on your definition of nano-it's Deep Sea Aquatic's Neo Aquarium, but it's 34 gallons. There's another aquarium store that seems to put together these Nano packages with sumps and MH lighting, but I can't seem to find the brand name of it...the way I recognize them is they always refer to something called CAD lighting-some of those have sumps too. Again, I love the idea.

    Elos' 20 gallon Mini has a sump

    I hope that was okay to include, Eric...my apologies if it was a no-no.
    I feel like I've seen another one too but I can't remember where and also can't remember which company made it, but I'll keep looking around and see if I can find it. I love the sump on a nano idea!

    Where are the new nanos that have a sump? I have not sen these.

    @brandon

    Individually no but in a bank of them will. Also, when you are driving them at near their max current, they can heat up so much as to damage themselves and drastically lower their life span. Having heat sinks and fans are necessary to keep them operating for the promised 10 years of life.

    4 fans? Do the LEDs really put off that much heat?

    Looks very interesting indeed, but I have to say that I very much prefer the new nano's that are utilizing sump style filtration rather than the restrictive back-of-the tank filtration. If we could keep the LED's and add the sump filtration, I'd love to get my hands on it. Do you think that lighting could support SPS corals, Eric? Thanks!
