RK2 Protein SkimmerIn the past, RK2 protein skimmers were the standard for industrial applications. Utilizing a large Mazzei venturi injector, the pumps relied upon high pressure pumps to inject air into the body. Turbulence was prevalent, bubble size was not optimal, but contact time was immense. The RK2 rocket skimmer design does work, but with the advent of aircooled needlwheel pumps (e.g. Sequence Dart Needle Wheel) we’ve seen how much more performance we can get on large commercial skimmers.

My Reef Creations has stepped up to the plate incorporating newer NW technology to a commercial sized model, similar in dimensions to past RK2s. The  MRC IS-2492-W distances itself greatly from most industrial size skimmers with its 1/3hp Sequence needlewheel pump.

The skimmer body is 24″ with 92″ overall height, making this skimmer larger than many reefers display tanks! The IS-2492-W is also fitted with a washdown system with integrated LCD control panel.

MRC has not listed any stats for this model. We’re curious where the air draw numbers and electric consumption are at. If on par with similar designs, this PVC and Cast Acrylic monstrosity would have no problem handling system volumes with thousands of gallons. All this is yours for just $7,200.

I wonder how much water alone a skimmer that size holds?
