Last month we shared some information on Tropical Matine Centre’s (TMC) new AquaBeam 1000HD and GroBeam 100HD LED lighting units, expanding on their Modular AquaRay LED Strips. More recently, fellow blogger Owen James @AquaDaily tweeted a link to an interesting thread on UltimateReef–the UK’s premier reef aquarium forum.

UR member NewbieNeil shared some credible insights on the AquaBeam 1000 launch including the flyer above that touts 1200 lumens of output, “equivalent to a 150w metal halide”. As we learned from the early LED models that attempted to market similarly, such a comparison holds little weight without any supporting details… but it’s worth highlighting.

The waterproof design measures in at 20x20cm or just under a 8″ square, sporting ten high power CREE LEDs at just under 3w each–pushing out a rumored 40-60 lumens per watt.

Each AquaBeam 1000HD Tile will retail for £250 or £350 with TMC’s upcoming controller / dimmer. Take a peak at the sprouting discussion on UR with insight from those that have seen a few prototypes floating around the UK.

Cheers to TMC for using high powered LEDs in a lightweight modular design.

Well, if nothing else, it certainly makes you think that the new lighting revolution might be on the way. While it’s still well out of my price range, things always start out that way and the benefits of being more ecological and saving money on energy costs is really promising. I’m really crossing my fingers for the whole LED revolution to take hold and become an “everyman(or woman) light”.

I’ve been thinking about this post for some time, and think it could be a great product. I have an idea for an LED lighting system that might be a little more flexible. I mean, given the endless amount of personal preferences out there when it comes to reef lighting, I think an even more modular design might be better.

My idea is based around an aluminium square matrix that would allow 2″-3″ square LED modules to be simply clicked into the pre-wired matrix. Each module would have their own individual headsink with perhaps a lensed bank of 3-LEDs. The modules could be sold as 3-white, 1-white 1-blue 1-royal blue, or any combination. The prewired matrix could then be programmed to allow each module to be controlled individually allowing endless intensity and colour options.

Not sure it really makes sense without a drawing.

I am interested in AquaBeam 1000HD c/w controller.. but like the other single strip options as well.

Can I get this anywhere in Canada or close. How much? + ship

(tank is 90 GAL. 48″ X 18″ X 22″ Should I get Qty2 pads .. one controller.. or qty 1 of each is enough, or go with the strip ideas
      Thank you

I Have a Similar Size aquarium 48″x25x18 and I started with 2 x 1000 led in reef white but this was infficient so now have 2x 1000 marine white tiles, 2x 1000 reef white tiles 1 aqua beam 500 marine blue and 2 x aquabeam combos which now gives the right quality of light to support hard corals, let me know if you want some photos
