One of our readers, Luciano is actually mapping this area for a Navy client and has sent us additional information from a White House press release. The original map I posted was not the most detailed, but the one below shows much more informations.

    • The Marianas Trench is in red and Island Units are in yellow are part of the monument
    • The Stars are a visible representation of a 1 nautical mile buffer zone around the Active Hydrothermal Submarine Volcanoes.

A big thanks to Luciano for sending us this much improved map. For even more information here’s a brief video from CBS… which includes a glimpse of an adult Chaetodon flavocoronatus.

I hope to take a trip to this area in the future. Check out this search on Flickr for some images that will envoke jealousy and possibly rage in those of us wearing hats, gloves, and scarves…

This area includes Kingman’s Reef, which National Geographic recently featured. Unfortunately and fortunately, I don’t think its possible to visit for tourism. For more info and NG’s usual amazing pics, here’s a link: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/07/kingman-reef/warne-text
