A Portland, Oregon man has pleaded guilty to first degree animal abuse and domestic violence assault, resulting in a sentence of 2yrs probation, a psychological evaluation and an undisclosed period of community service. This sentence comes after a messy break up which lead to the murder of his ex’s purple Betta named DeLorean, which the murderer man purchased for the woman.

According to documents submitted to the court, the man wanted to get back together with his girlfriend, but she did not–he shoved her against the bathtub and she fled. Upon returning she found her purple DeLorean on the floor… horrifically murdered by a 12″ serrated knife that impaled the fishes abdomen,  pinning it the wood floor–were kidding about the blade size, but really the guy did kill the fish by stabbing it with a knife. Not cool at all.

He later confessed to the killing the betta with a line that will haunt him for the rest of his life:

“If she can’t have me, then she can’t have the fish.”

    Seriously?

    RIP DeLorean–you will be missed.

This must be becoming an epidemic-I just heard last week about a woman who killed and ate her ex’s pet goldfish. Clearly doing these things is very, very wrong but I think this is a really difficult thing for the courts to deal with as far as appropriate punishments. Speaking with a co-worker about these two cases, we agreed that the bottom line is that if you are willing to commit violence of any kind because someone rejects you, you clearly have issues that need to be addressed. Legally though, it seems really difficult to deal with. I guess the punishment in this case is fitting…I guess.

A marine biologist friend of mine once told me that vertebrates are protected under the law while inverts generally are not.

Not sure if that is true… but it presents an interesting ethical divide.
