iPond Fail – Portable iPod Speaker / Betta ‘Aquarium’

Really? This seemed like a good idea? You’re looking at the iPond, a portable speaker / Betta jail cell that is being sold in Australia… Because small containers with living fish are extremely portable and a great iPod fashion accessory (?!). The ‘aquarium’ holds 350ml  of water giving the impression of a static screen shot–because the fish literally cannot move.

We were slow to the party on this one. Gizmodo reported on it back in December ’07 stating animal rights groups were working to get the product of the shelves. As they should, not only is it inhumane it’s a rip off at $70 Australian or about $60USD. If this product made it to mass production, we’re even more scared of the potential ideas that didn’t make it. Packing photo below via presentation maintenant.

      Stupid idea…

I thought the BettaCube was bad enough – 350ml, that’s insanity.

Not only the size, but these aquariums really do not accomodate a heater and people who buy these cubes and other tiny Betta homes seem to forget that these are TROPICAL fish that need high 70′s, low 80′s like any other tropical fish. If they aren’t killed by the stress of being in a drop of water, they will certainly die a slow, short, disease ridden life from being in temps that are WAY too cold. Aquarists really need to spread the word to non-aquarists about what they are doing to these fish without proper accomodations. You are sentencing a living creature to a short, horrible life. I understand some people “don’t know”, but it’s time for anyone keeping ANY living thing to realize research and due diligence must be done before bringing ANYTHING live home, be it plant, animal or other. Just because it can’t show pain doesn’t mean it’s not a living creature that deserves the respect of being cared for. Thanks for bringing this topic to the forefront, Eric.

I’m dumbfounded. Stupefied, even. I don’t know which is worse; the fact that they made something like this or the fact that someone out there is actually going to buy it. And why the heck am i wondering how the sound quality is? BAH! I think my IQ just went down a point or two.

Got pulled off the shelves a long time ago.
there was intervention by the animal welfare authorities
here in Australia, shortly after they were released.
