Volx, a Japanese lighting manufacturer has bumped up the wattage of their Grassy LeDio spotlights with the LeDio 21– a 7 x 3w LED spotlight in a cast aluminum heatsink body, that simply screws into a household socket. The 1/3rd less powerful Grassy LeDdio 7 LED spotlight has now been available for sometime, which featured 7 x 1w LEDs.
Similar spotlights are available from numerous factories in China in any color you choose (see first photo for generic PAR30 LED lamp). The issue with many of them is quality and heat. These cast aluminum heatsinks often do not dissipate heat well, leading to complete or premature LED failure. This may be a problem for the LeDio 21 due to the significant increase in wattage.
Initial reports for the LeDio 21 appear to be good, however, they were just release on October 25th. GBD contributor Hideki Mukai is now running two of them in the Deep Blue (7 blue LED) and Coral Blue (7 blue & 1 white leds) color combinations over his spotlight reef.
For now the verdict is still out on the LeDio 21 LED spotlight. LEDs of this sort may not be the most efficient in terms of PAR to watt ratios–but their plug-n-play attractiveness and ability to pop colors is undeniable. Greens and oranges just glow under the 450nm LEDs.
