Unless you’re at a University, access to scientific papers can be troublesome and expensive. Different online academic paper vendors do sell them–but at a cost ranging from $10 to over $80 it is unrealistic. For aquarists seeking information or doing research this can be a significant hurdle to overcome. Now a new website has launched called DeepDyve that will provide affordable access to scientific papers.

For $0.99 DeepDyve allows you to borrow an article for 24 hours or you can pay a monthly fee to have permanent access to them. There is a slight catch in that the article viewers flash interface does not permit printing but as you can see above it’s nothing a screen grab can’t handle.

Additionally DeepDyve’s search can handle 20,000 characters meaning you can enter sentences or large paragraphs to find missing articles. After some browsing ourselves it looks like the search could use some refinement with the scientific names of animals. For example a search of “Pomacanthus imperator” pulled results ranging from human finger and arm reaction time to skin cancer. DeepDyve is still in beta, but we’ll be keeping an eye on it.

    Check it out at DeepDyve.com
