Today GE has unveiled a new market-ready drop in LED module that was developed with the help of California based Journee Lighting. With just a twist this new LED module is connected to the fixture both electrically and thermally. This offers the advantage of easy replacement both in the short term, allowing different intensities and kelvin light to be used as if replacing a traditional lightbulb, and in the long term as LED technology improves. The LED, Optic, and driver are all contained within this puck shaped module. This is a large change as typically LED luminaire designs have the LEDs permanently or semi-permanently attached to the heatsink / fixture.
These are currently available in 6, 8 and 10w flavors that offer full dimming ability and luminous efficacy ranging from 57 to 70 lumens per watt, depending on the color of light. Shown here is the AZARA LED Spotlight from Journee lighting. At the moment these drop in LED modules are only compatible with Journee lights, but GE will be opening up this platform to other designers.
“Leading lighting designers and architects are on the record with concerns about integrated LED fixture upgradeability and serviceability. Some won’t specify an integrated LED fixture, said Steven Briggs–Vice President of Marketing and Global Product Management, “This is GE’s answer. It’s future-proof and market-ready.”
Are these ready to light aquariums? No, nor are they meant to. But they do offer a glimpse of how LED technology may be implemented into everyday life. It’s up to us to adapt and improve upon it for the animals we love.
