Mike Leven is now the former President and CEO of the Georgia Aquarium. Leven has resigned to take on a new position as Executive Vice President and COO of Las Vegas Sands Corp. He will be moving out to Vegas in April, but will still reside as vice chair for the Georgia Aquarium’ board of directors.
Anthony Godfrey will be filling the vacant role as President. Godfrey has been the Executive Vice President, COO, and CFO of the Georgia Aquarium, and should have no issues stepping up.
Regarding the change in leadership, aquarium founder Bernie Marcus has said,
“Mike has done everything I have asked and more in the past 18 months. He strengthened our leadership team by adding Billy Hurley and Greg Bossart; created the highly successful ‘something new every ninety days’ program, and oversaw the initial stages of the dolphin expansion program.”
Regarding Godfrey, Marcus added:
“I have all the confidence in the world that Anthony Godfrey will continue the mission and culture of the Aquarium. His financial acumen, understanding of special events and commitment to guest services is unparalleled.I plan to resume my CEO role so that the leadership team can focus on operations and the many plans in store for Aquarium visitors this year. “
Although Leven’s experience and success has previously been within the Hotel industry, it’s a shame the Aquarium will lose such a great entrepreneur. This is now the second time in two years the Georgia Aquarium has changed leadership. However, with Bernie Marcus back as CEO combined with the previous work of Leven the aquarium ought to have a continued stretch of success.
