Eshopps has come out with a new economy cone skimmer they are calling the S-150. It came a bit later to the cone party, and truly doesn’t offer anything new or revolutionary. However, it is under $400 and has a wide distribution base making it relatively affordable and easy to find. This hobby is notoriously expensive, and in the past cone skimmers have not been the exception. The S-150 is based on a 6″ cone that tapers to a 4″ neck with a total height of 21″ (with a removal base). The skimmer is powered by a Via Aqua 2300 which draws 450lph @ 23w. Eshopps is rating the S-150 for 150g and less.
With an MSRP of $389.95 this skimmer may offend the skimmer-bourgeoisie European skimmer fanatics. It is no way meant to compete with the likes of ATB or Vertex, however it is an attractive price for a cone body, complete with bubble plate. There is nothing stopping the DIY adventurous from swapping out the meshmodded Via Aqua for something more fitting, such as an AquaBee 2000/1 or Maxi Jet Utility pump.
The new S-150 Cone is not to be confused with the larger Eshopps Snow Cone Skimmer (S-200). That particular model comes with a different output configuration, air silencer, and upgraded AquaBee 2000/1 pump. We have no experience with the Via Aqua pump being used on the economy cone skimmer (S-150), but with some tinkering there is not doubt that the S-150 Cone could be an affordable conical option. Expect these to hit store shelves in October or November.
What’s even more affordable than $389.95? Free. Eshopps is giving away two cone skimmers… and keep your eyes peeled you may see another reef giveaway on GBD…
