Elos RGB LED Prototype changes colors on demand

Last we spoke with Elos they had been in the design stage of a few  LED prototype fixtures. Now a  new video from the Italian headquarters has been revealed showing off a prototype RGB LED unit in what appears to be the e-lite’s casing illuminating a soft coral dominated Elos Mini. As you will see from the video, the LEDs allow control of Red, Green and Blue colors creating a near endless array of colors.

The benefit RGB LEDs offer is controllability. There are numerous RGB LEDs on the market such as tri and tetra chromatic RGBs that can create white light and thousands of other colors. They are typically a red green and blue LED packed together sharing a common anode or cathode. This makes wiring and spacing easier,  however, very few rival the luminous efficacy stats of traditional single color high powered LEDs. A better option may be to use individual high powered colored LEDs to reach a similar effect.

Elos RGB LEDThis may be the best way to go about it for reef lighting as Red and Green LEDs are no where near as desirable as blue and white–in fact some evidence from Dana Riddle suggests that red LEDs should potentially be ignored all together.

Elos is currently experimenting with new;y available high powered LEDs. Per Elos USA, the fixture above is a pure prototype and there is no indication at this point that it will become a fully developed product or be brought to the U.S..

At GBD we’re salivating at the day LEDs power stunning SPS reefs via DMX control.  It will happen, hopefully sooner rather then later.
