Some may have noticed the small advert we placed in the sidebar to promote “Earth Hour”. Tomorrow at 8:30PM (Regardless of time zone) people around the world are asked to turn off their lights for just 60 minutes. Organizers are hoping to get 1 billion people to participate; The UN’s Secretary General has called this “the biggest climate changed demonstration ever attempted.”
I will be the first to admit there is an environmental naivety to this, and it should not take a promotion such as Earth Hour to be more conscious of our electric consumption and carbon footprint. But keep this in mind; last year in Chicago alone it was estimated Earth Hour kept 840,000 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air in just that 60 minute period.
Tomorrow night is a chance to reduce carbon emissions. No matter what your views are regarding global warming, environmentalism, or even the World Wildlife Fund, turning off the lights for just 60 minutes can only help our planet and the aquatic animals we love. All while saving a few dollars on utilities.
