Diver’s Den shows Amphiprion mccullochi to North America at $6K

While they are now getting notoriety for it, they were not the first.  These actually landed on the East Coast a month and a half ago!…However, given the widespread following of Live Aquaria’s Diver’s Den, for most this was the first talk of these entering the States. For such a rare fish, they did enter with style. Live Aquaria has these priced at $6,000 for the 3″ bonded pair.

Why so much? These rare clowns are highly protected in their Lord Howe habitat and are actually captive bred from Ryan’s Reef in Australia. For more information on these guys, check out our previous coverage with info on Ryan’s detailed journey.

The high price will keep most at bay, but for a true clownfish lover and rare fish collector the opportunity to obtain what was once unattainable may prove too tempting. It will be interesting to see how these move in the U.S. markets. Given the extremely small consumer base that would even consider purchasing this fish, it may take time. Even Japan has been slower than usual in selling these and with the price they command it is understandable.

When someone does buy this fish, I am sure the thought of breeding them will pop on their mind… While it’s easier said then done, given the current returns we’re seeing in the market it may not be that bad of an investment!

Two thumbs up to Ryan’s Reef for breeding these and making them available to aquarists around the world. Another two thumbs up to Kevin Kohen and LiveAquaria for consistently bringing the best of the best.

Really pleased to see they’re captive-bred. As I’ve said before that’s my qualm with many of these rare fish (not such an issue if they just happen to be from deep and rarely fished water, or similar). Rareclownfish.com is new to me, too. Get my reading specs on!

There is no choice, they must be captive bred because export from Lord Howe Island is very carefully regulated and is illegal. The story of how these came to be is very interesting. We are lucky to actually get any of these fish in the American Market as the Japanese pay much more than we are accustomed to paying.

From what I’ve heard from a few aquarists in Japan, they are selling for 10-20% more over there ($3,300USD+ each). They are just willing to pay more than we are for these unique fish.
