Dive Into Your Imagination recently sat down with deep water diver and famed ichthyologist Richard Pyle for a fun interview. In it he discusses closer circuit re-breathers, undescribed species, hybridization and mimicry. At the end he is asked, what is your favorite ocean animal?.Without hesitation he states the Dr. Seuss Soapfish… Belonoperca pylei, named after himself!

My favorite ocean animal is a little fish with orange polka-dots and a large yellow head, which I discovered on my first really deep dive. When I first found it, I didn’t even know what family it belonged to. It later was given a scientific name by some colleagues at the Smithsonian Institution: Belonoperca pylei.

See the full interview here at Diveintoyourimagination.com. For more information on B. pylei see Baldwin and Smith’s piece from 1998 describing the then-new species for Ichthyological Research.
