This past Saturday the Chicago Marine Aquarium Society teamed up with Uberfrags to host the annual Frag swap in West Chicago. Originally Eric Borneman and Matt Pedersen were scheduled to speak, but Eric could not make it to this event so the new Ice Cap man Steve Pro filled in.

Steve gave a presentation on poisonous and venomous animals that can make there way into aquariums, and how to go about dealing with these potential dangers. After Steve, Matt Pedersen gave a very interesting presentation on his experiences breeding the Orange Spotted Filefish (Oxymonacanthus longirostris). For more information on Matt’s work so far, as well as some incredible photos of juvenile fish you can read about his journey with this interesting species on MOFIB.

It was a good time, and I got to meet a handful of new people. Here are some photos I manage to snap, squeezed between the crowds.

In the past couple years there has been a heavy emphasis on Zoanthids , but this year Acropora, Acanthastrea, Micromussa, and Favites ruled. It will be interesting to see what shows up next year. It seems Chalices and flabellinadae corals are just getting “hot” in Chicago.

I headed out a bit early, but between the huge turn out and some very nice corals this swap appeared to be a big success. All of the local coral guys were there and it was great catching up with everyone. Thanks to CMAS & Uber for hosting the event.

Wish I would’ve been at this, just joined CMAS now. What is that orange and red coral (the swap-d picture)? I’ve never seen something like that before.

@ Richie, Welcome to CMAS. The orange and red coral is a non-photosynthetic Dendrophyllia spp. Most likely Dendrophyllia coccinea. They are like sun corals, but are often extended during the day, very cool, vibrant, and expensive! that piece shown above was selling for $250 IIRC.

Going to have to research that guy, thanks for the info.
