UK Aquarium Lighting company, Arcadia has launched a new OT2 LED website promoting their recently released OT2 T5 + LED hybrid luminaire. The design is able to squeeze in 6 high output t5s with single lamp reflectors and a mix of white and royal blue high intensity LEDs into a fixture with a thickness of just 40mm.
Arcadia utilizes a 1:1 mix of royal blue and white Cree XR-E LEDs driven at 700mA on their custom driver / PCB setup which is connected to one large central heatsink. These LEDs are more than a gimmick and can pack some PAR while also producing glitter lines. The only downside we see is is active cooling–the thermal management may be enough for the LEDs, but we do know active cooling is required for optimal T5 light output.
The T5s are dimmable in two groups (4 lamps and two lamps)–unfortunately for this 6 lamp fixture there are not many 3 lamp T5 ballasts on the market. Both the LEDs and T5s are controlled by this compact controller capable of dawn/dusk simulation and cloud passing.
Overall the design is attractive and it utilizes two newer trends in reef aquarium lighting–T5s and LEDs. Expect to see this light hit UK retailers next month. Given the limited distribution outside the UK, yank’s here in the States would be lucky to get this light in 2010–prove us wrong Arcadia.
