ACIII & iPhone Users Rejoice, AquaNotes iPhone App Brings Aquariums to 2009

Nullriver Inc. has released AquaNotes, a free iPhone Application that allows 24/7 remote monitoring of your aquarium via an Aqua Controller III or Aqua Controller III Pro and your iPhone.

Users can connect to their Neptune Systems AC3 control unit anywhere in the world using the port 23 interface on the AquaController and then control inputs like Lights, pumps and fans while away from your aquarium via an iPhone or iPod Touch. Users can also observe realtime and historical data!

For example, while in NYC for work with an AC3 and this iPhone application I would be able to view the current temperature of my aquarium, and if it is rising above a comfortable limit, with just a tap I could turn off the Metal Halides so that my deepwater fish would not be stressed. All while using a slick interface that is user friendly. To me that that type of control is priceless, and while I prefer to keep things simple and not use controllers, an AC3 may very well be worth it now.

One user by the handle DeadPirate gave the following review that sums it up very well:

“This app is awesome. While standing in front of the tank I can on/off lights, pumps, fans and look at histograms of my PH and temp! Random connection problems are usually related to the iPhone network interface (3g, wifi switching etc) and the controller single user stuff, but there is no complaint from here. I can make sure my tank is ok from anywhere! Thanks all for a great app. This thing will sell AquaControllers.”

Some bugs have been worked out from the first release, and the new updated version now supports PX1000. Best of all it’s free, so give it a shot. You can search iTunes for “AquaNotes” or this link will take you there in iTunes as well. This app brings the ability and ease of modern technology to reef aquariums, I am sure it will become a hit across the online reef world. More UI Screen Shots below:

Two thumbs to ZigZag and Nullriver for this app.

On the negative side – the application is using telnet to communicate. So if you’re on any network that somebody can watch the traffic on (wifi), they’ll get your username and password the first time you use this.

I can’t get it to work on a different port than 23 even though the app lets me input any number port. Any ideas if this is a bug or it only works on 23?
