A few people did not catch the twitter message I sent out today, so I’ll give a brief update on the two doses of Zeozym so far. This product has not been discussed much until recently and has spurred numerous e-mails in regards to its effectiveness and our experiences so far. If you missed the first post, you can learn more about Zeozym here.

My initial “judgement”, would be that it is like a more potent Coral Snow.  When adding the powdered substance to water you expect some cloudiness, but after a good shake the solution becomes white. It is difficult to capture in photos, but the cloudiness is different than CS–less sediment like.

No changes in the tank have been observed so far, but our protein skimmer is enjoying this additive.  After cleaning out the skimmer the day after a Zeozym dose, I can say the stench puts any other skimmate to shame. It is bad. A thick cream colored sludge shows the additive is being removed what else it is pulling out with it is hard to say. After next week we will adjust the dosing to 2 times a week.

Original testers have said it takes weeks before any results are seen, so we’re being patient. It is not a miracle nutrient reduction cure and it will take time to be effective.

If you have purchased the product or plan to, be forewarned the lid is very difficult to get off. Also be very gentle when putting it back on or you will be in the same situation to get it back off. I am tempted to put it in a new container…

Feel free to ask any questions or share your experiences with Zeozym in the comments.

Thanks for the update. I haven’t noticed any changes in my tank either. Some say their sand and rock is ‘cleaned’ after using ZeoZym. But that’s most likely due to the ZeoZym settling & sticking, Ha…

      Hello Eric,
Did not you turn off Skimmer after you dosed ZeoZym? I think the instruction says skimmer is better to stop for 1-2hours.

Anyway, I dosed it once. After I dosed the sand became more white on the next day. I might overdose… =)

      Hi Taka,

Yes we turn the skimmer off for 2 hours. Glad to hear it is working well for you. You’ve got mail my friend!

      Hi Eric,

My suggestion is “Not Stop Skimmers”.
We should make skimmers working weak during adding these materials because it makes a less oxygen condition.
I have an experience to forget turn on a skimmer, and then lost some fishes.
Be caredul of these easy mistakes.

      Tetsuo,

I agree that turning off the air flow will cause a slight drop in O2, but I couldn’t say, if this is dangerous over such a short time period. On the other hand, I simply remove the collection cup from my skimmer for two hours. No skimmate, but the O2 cycle is unbroken.

      Hi Tetsuo and Jamie,

I certainly agree. For those with external skimmers where taking the collection off there is another option. Try turning the air valves down low enough so that air is still being drawn, but there is not enough air and too much turbulence to create a foam head.

      Eric,

You think this product could be something very close to plain old kalk? I’ve been applying these same instructions and proceedures with plain old kalk and have notice similar results! Only exception is I use rodi water rather then aquarium water…..
