It wasn’t until just a few days ago that I took a second look at this skimmer line by Tunze.  I saw a sicce NW and large diameter body and thought to myself it’s a more expensive ATI with less air input. After taking a second look my thoughts have drastically changed.

As many know the sicce PSK25oo is a great skimmer pump. With a meshwheel it is easily capable of injecting 45+scfh, but it can be very finicky with starting and heat issues. Most of these problems are resolved by the reliable NW… that the Tunze has. PSK NW aside, the best part about this skimmer is its patented anti-overflow design.

When the surface tension of the water changes it can cause a mess with today’s higher powered NW skimmers. A water change, spawning event, and even certain foods can cause gallons of saltwater to overflow on your floor. Tunze took care of this issue by creating a internal drain to the collection cup. If the skimmer should over flow it drains to the intermediate chamber which then causes the tunze hydrofoamer pump to suck water in and no longer inject air …and now we both know what that “goofy” looking collection cup is for.

Starting at just under $8oo it’s not surprising these skimmers aren’t that popular. I certainly wont be purchasing one anytime soon… but for those looking for a simple and efficient skimmer, on paper, the Tunze Master DOC line is tough to beat.

Not master series, but I decided to go with a 9010 for my tank – not only for the small footprint, but also because they’re reputed to be more ‘plankton friendly’. If i can paraphrase correctly, the larger plankton are not directly drawn into the pump, or I guess ‘hydrofoamer’ that the DOC use – as opposed to more aggressive skimmers that just suck it all in and skim it all out.

Very cool, it should be a perfect fit for your tank. I really like how quiet they are.
