    Today’s frustrating revelation…

Queue depressing music… look what I came across today… AEFW bite marks and quite a few! To be honest it’s not as bad as it looks, and I am not very worried. A ReVive review and testing to come, as well as an interesting observation on what looks to be a natural predator.   [...]

Im sorry to hear your beautiful reef got struck by AEFW, i know how you feel. I recently found out ive got them too. I am currently just turkey basting them off until i get the supplies ready for a proper QT tank.

Looking online for help, I found a simple test: Take the coral, place it in a white bowl and fill it up with water from your reef. Add a few drops of Lugol’s Solution, stir and wait about a minute. Next, use a turkey baster to blast the coral with a few jets of water, and see what blows off or out of the coral. If you see flat oval disks coming out of the coral, it is most likely infested with acropora eating flatworms (AEFW for short).

Sorry to hear that. Would a glass bottom make it easier to find things like this?

Clarifying, does a glass bottom make it easier to find worms?

      Charles,

Sorry to hear you’ve got them too. Keep basting, I know a few people that have had success with just this and some wrasses.

      Richie,

The glass does help some, by making it easier to blow them off. Other than that it’s too early to tell.

That blows…. IMHO, treat a good three times. I don’t think the lifecycle is as well understood about AEFW as it is with Red Bugs. Every new piece I get is immediately dipped, in 5 days dipped again, and in another 5 days dipped again. Hardly perfect though…A quarantine system is in the works – small barebottom 20G long tank, a couple pieces of live rock, 4 T5s, no skimmer, heater, and a powerhead. Days 1 and 9 intercepter, days 3 and 11 fluke tabs…..
