    glassbox lift off

After waiting just shy of 9 weeks the base was completed, we finally picked it up today. Big thanks to our friend [Logan] for giving us a lift and hauling it back to our place in his fine SUV. Here’s an image of just the stand, the tank is currently on top and filling up with water. [...]

Here’s an image of just the stand, the tank is currently on top and filling up with water. It looks better than we imagined.

Here’s one more shot head on.  We currently have it lit by one blue spot, and the way the beveled starphire refracts the light is gorgeous. I’ll try later to capture it with our camera.

Here’s a shot of the oak frame.

Check out these glitter lines. The white bottom really reflects the light. We’re excited to see the long term effect on the base of our SPS.

Love the stand. what material whas used on the outside?

    • Graf-X

Did you have this stand custom made locally?

    • e&f

      Hey Graf-X,

It is a white laminate (I am unsure of the brand/type) and it was custom made by a local builder. It took 9 weeks, as the laminate had to be redone due to chipping….but we are very happy with the final product.

very nice. is the back left unfinished or do one of the panels/sides come off (for sump access)… great build!

    • e&f

Thanks. It is finished, but open for sump access. The sump will be tucked underneath to the right side, with storage space on the left and an external skimmer free standing on the floor.

      Eric,

Do you access your sump from behind the stand or is the entire facing of the stand a facade that can be removed to access the sump? I’m considering making a new stand and I want to make a laminated 3-sided one piece facade that I can slide out of the way to gain access to the sump from any side I feel the need to. I’m just wondering if this is what you have so I can get some feedback.

      Thanks!

      Hi Andrew,

Yes I access the sump from the back. The skimmer is external sitting on the ground outside the stand for easy access.

I considered the sliding 3 piece facade as well, but for our application there wasn’t any need. A fellow reefer Marlon has taken our design and put that twist on it. You can see photo’s of his beautiful new aquarium here : http://designandreef.blogspot.com/
