Rare Fish | Odontanthias fuscipinnis

This gorgeous pair of Yellow Hawaiian Deepwater Anthias, Odontanthias fuscipinnis, made their way to Japan via Blue Harbor. Apparently these 15cm and 13cm specimens have decided to “pair up”, or as Mr. Koji Wada has said, “fall in love”. These fish command a serious price tag, besides the Waikiki aquarium I am unaware of any other specimens in the U.S.

I love the “tough guy” look these fish and the Holanthias (Odontanthias) genus have. Here is a juvenile specimen owned by Mr. Wantanabe, one of the top Japanese collectors. Not be ignored are the pair of Earlei Wrasses (Cirrhilabrus earlei ) at the far right. Mr. Wantanabe also owns the Venustus x Multifasciatus Hybrid!

  • @Jason, They are collected in Hawaii in very deep waters. There's a chance they will make their way here.... but for a pair it will be just shy of $10K.

You'll need to fight off of the Japanese, they love these Anthias and receive nearly all that are collected. I'd suggest asking your favorite shops for a very special order :)

Where can I get a pair in the states?
  • Jake I've got nothing on those specific wrasses shown. A few here in the US were lucky enough to get some when Twilight was still running.

Taka, so does that mean you'll be buying both? ;)

I just checked the price of the pair. It is about $9,000.

they really looks like my borbonius pair, but i love their color!
  • Its hard to beat a fully colored borbonius but I am sure these guys are gorgeous in their own way. How about some more info on the earli wrasses?
